Cattle manure

Cattle manure is an organic solid manure from cattle farming and is considered one of the proven natural fertilizers in agriculture. Due to its high content of organic matter, cattle manure is particularly well suited for improving soil structure and supporting sustainable humus formation. It is commonly used in arable farming and grassland management and contributes to long-term soil fertility.

Application

The application of cattle manure is governed by the currently applicable Fertilizer Ordinance (DüMV). Autumn application is possible, for example, for winter oilseed rape, winter barley, or cover crops, provided that the legal requirements are met. The exact application rate should be based on the nutrient requirements of the crop and the farm’s nutrient balance.

Storage

Cattle manure can be stored at the field edge or on suitable storage areas such as a silage or manure pad, provided that legal requirements and storage periods are observed. Proper storage helps to prevent nutrient losses and maintain the quality of the organic fertilizer.

Advantages

Cattle manure is a proven organic fertilizer with long-term effects. Due to its high content of organic matter, it makes a significant contribution to humus formation and sustainably improves soil structure. Regular application, especially for humus-depleting crops, can enhance soil fertility and improve water retention capacity. At the same time, the chemical properties of the soil are positively influenced, increasing the availability of nutrients to plants.

Effectiveness

Cattle manure has both short-term and long-term effects on the soil. A portion of the nitrogen is available to plants in the first year, while the remaining portion is gradually released through the mineralization of organic matter. This results in a sustainable and recurring nitrogen effect. The nutrients it contains, such as phosphorus and potassium, are readily available to plants and support uniform plant growth.
